Kampung Boy
Loosely based on a series of graphics novels drawn by cartoonist Lat,
"Kampung Boy" was a Malaysian animated television series.
Originally
broadcast in the late-90s on Astro Ria, the series followed the
adventures of a young boy, Mat, and his family who lived in a
traditional 'kampung' (village). The show was animated in the
Philippines with the scripts handled by a team in Los Angeles, under the
strict supervision of Lat, and voice recording done in Kuala Lumpur by
local actors in English. The series reruns regularly on Astro Ceria,
however it is not available on DVD.
Season 1 started off with
less 'refined' character designs and the animation felt looser. By the
time of "Oh Tok' (the episode which won an Annecy Award in 1999), the
overall design of the show became more standardized. Recurring themes in
this season included the positive and negative intrusions of
modernization on the traditional rural way of life.
